The relationship between Bo Bichette and the Toronto Blue Jays might have been more complicated than we thought! It seems like a former teammate is shedding light on why the star infielder ultimately landed with the New York Mets, and it wasn't just about the money.
Whit Merrifield, who played alongside Bichette for a couple of seasons, recently shared his perspective on his podcast, "6ix inning stretch." He revealed that while Bo loves Toronto, the fans, and the city, there were underlying issues that may have soured his connection with the team. Merrifield suggested that some events involving Bichette, the coaching staff, and the front office might have "tainted that relationship a little bit."
He admitted he wasn't privy to the specifics of the contract negotiations or how much the Blue Jays actively pursued bringing Bichette back. However, he felt that a parting of ways was likely inevitable, even if the team made some effort for the sake of the city and its fans.
This comes after Bichette signed a three-year, $126 million deal with the Mets, concluding his entire seven-year big league career with Toronto. At his introductory press conference, Bichette himself acknowledged that the move to New York was a decision he felt he needed to make.
Merrifield, who was teammates with Bichette in 2022 and 2023, reiterated that he wasn't surprised by the outcome. He stated, "I really would have been more surprised if he would have been back in Toronto just from some of the stuff that happened along the way." He clarified that he doesn't believe they ended on terrible terms, but rather that it was probably best for both parties to move on.
But here's where it gets controversial... Could these behind-the-scenes tensions have truly impacted a player's loyalty and a team's ability to retain talent? Or is this just the natural ebb and flow of professional sports, where relationships evolve and players seek new opportunities? What do you think? Did the Blue Jays let a valuable asset slip away due to internal issues, or was this a mutual, albeit perhaps strained, decision for the best?
