A broken promise: skilled workers' dreams shattered by UK's immigration U-turn
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, skilled workers who migrated to the UK with the promise of a better future for their families now face an uncertain future. These individuals, who have contributed to British society and played by the rules, are now at risk of having their dreams snatched away due to proposed changes in immigration policies.
The skilled worker visa, once a pathway to settled status after five years, now hangs in the balance. The government's plans to double the qualifying period for indefinite leave to remain to ten years have left many, just months away from reaching that milestone, in a state of limbo.
'A game-changer while the ball is in play'
Kushani Suraweera, a senior care worker who left her stable life in Sri Lanka to start a new life in the UK, is one such individual. She took the first step towards settled status in October 2023, only to be met with tragedy in 2025 when her husband passed away suddenly.
Suraweera's husband died while she was unable to be by his side due to the renewal process of their UK visas. She explains, "Leaving the UK would have jeopardized our immigration status and my children's ability to remain with me. As a result, I had to endure the pain of not attending my husband's funeral."
The emotional toll on Suraweera and her children is immense. She describes a "lasting sense of guilt and unresolved grief," adding that her husband passed away alone in their shared home. "Immigration restrictions meant I experienced loss at a distance, while continuing to work and care for my children here."
'Uncertainty and instability'
Deepa Natarajan and her husband, Vinoth Sekar, are also facing an uncertain future. They are just eight months away from applying for settled status, but the proposed changes threaten to delay this process, potentially impacting their ability to start a family.
Natarajan emphasizes, "This is not just a policy change; it affects the most personal aspect of our lives. After years of contributing to the UK, we are facing emotional and personal strain due to these uncertainties."
The Skill Migrants Alliance, of which Natarajan and Suraweera are members, has indicated legal action if the government proceeds with these plans. Labour, while still consulting, has not made any final decisions.
'Hardline immigration policies'
Despite calls for moderation after Labour's defeat in the Gorton and Denton by-election, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has vowed to continue with these hardline immigration changes. Sources have dismissed claims that these plans will further alienate Muslim voters.
Natarajan urges ministers to reconsider, stating, "Immigration rules should not force families to choose between maintaining legal status and pursuing their dreams. We are real families with real lives, and we ask for fairness and compassion."
James Theje Gunatilake, who moved his family to the UK, speaks of the anxiety these proposals have caused. He and his wife rebuilt their lives from scratch, and now seek stability and a fair pathway forward after their sacrifices.
'Restoring control of the border'
A Home Office spokesperson defends the government's stance, stating, "We have cut net migration by 70% and tightened rules to restore control of the border. We have raised skilled worker salary and skills thresholds and closed loopholes. Our focus is on ensuring those who come to the UK contribute more than they take."
