UK Energy Suppliers Ranked: Who's Best and Worst in 2023? (2026)

Are you tired of energy suppliers that leave you in the dark? A recent ranking by Which? sheds light on the UK's best and worst energy providers, and the results might surprise you.

Scottish Power, EDF, and British Gas are among the lowest-rated suppliers in the annual Which? survey. These giants of the energy market received overall scores below 60% and only managed a disappointing two stars in the customer satisfaction survey.

Scottish Power took the bottom spot with a score of just 56%, particularly struggling with complaint handling. EDF wasn't far behind, scoring 58%, with issues stemming from limited customer service hours on their phone and email channels. British Gas rounded out the bottom three with a score of 59%, receiving mixed reviews for customer support but facing challenges in resolving complaints and facilitating customer switches.

On the brighter side, E (Gas and Electricity) emerged as the top performer, achieving an impressive score of 79%. They earned four stars for customer service, ease of contact, and statement clarity. A whopping 86% of E customers would recommend the provider.

Octopus Energy secured second place with a score of 74%, followed by 100Green and Sainsbury’s Energy, both scoring 72% and 71% respectively. Co-op Energy and Outfox Energy also scored well, but didn't achieve top ratings across all categories.

Which? surveyed nearly 12,000 energy customers in September and October, along with conducting an in-depth assessment of 17 energy firms' practices.

Which? Energy editor Emily Seymour highlighted that while some suppliers excel, others, including major players, are falling short. With fixed tariffs often cheaper than the energy price cap, there's no need to settle for poor service.

But here's where it gets controversial... The responses from the mentioned companies offer a glimpse into their perspectives.

Centrica, the owner of British Gas, pointed to improvements, citing a 20% annual decrease in complaints over the past two years. They also highlighted investments in customer service, including extended call center hours and a dedicated line for vulnerable customers.

EDF acknowledged the survey's findings and emphasized their commitment to improvement. They highlighted their strong Trustpilot rating of 4.8 based on over 154,000 five-star reviews, indicating customer satisfaction in other areas.

Scottish Power referenced the Citizens Advice scorecard, emphasizing its methodology for assessing firms' performance and highlighting the investments made to improve service.

And this is the part most people miss... The survey underscores the importance of switching providers if you're unhappy. With fixed tariffs often offering better value, it's a good idea to shop around for a supplier that combines competitive pricing with excellent customer service.
