MotoGP aerodynamics are a tricky beast, and Pedro Acosta knows it all too well. The young rider recently spent a grueling day testing KTM’s latest fairing updates, only to realize that progress in this field is rarely clear-cut.
On the final day of MotoGP 2025 testing—or the first day of 2026, depending on how you look at it—Acosta focused on aerodynamics, a critical yet complex aspect of bike performance. KTM brought two fairings to Valencia: their 2025 design and a bold new version heavily inspired by Ducati’s 2024 model. The updated fairing featured large downwash ducts at the front, a bulbous rear section, compact sidepod wings, and the same front wings KTM introduced mid-season. Acosta admitted that evaluating aerodynamic changes isn’t straightforward. “With aero stuff, there are many grey areas,” he explained after the test, which was delayed due to overnight rain leaving the track damp. “It’s not black-and-white,” he added, emphasizing the difficulty in making quick decisions. While he found aspects of the new fairing promising, he stressed that the team needs to analyze the data thoroughly before drawing conclusions. And this is the part most people miss: even small aerodynamic tweaks can dramatically alter a bike’s handling, making rider feedback just one piece of the puzzle.
Despite the challenges, Acosta remained optimistic. “We spent the entire day testing aero components, and it was quite okay, to be honest,” he said. He noted that some changes made the bike feel more balanced, addressing both its strengths and weaknesses. However, he acknowledged that the factory’s data analysis will be crucial in validating his observations. “I think some stuff was going on,” he added with a hint of cautious enthusiasm.
The morning’s damp conditions threw a wrench into the testing schedule, limiting the team’s ability to complete their full plan. “There was more to try, but it was quite a mess not being able to ride this morning,” Acosta admitted. Ultimately, they prioritized aerodynamics, with Acosta conducting back-to-back tests between the standard and updated fairings. “After all, it was a good day,” he concluded, though he finished only fifth-fastest, just 0.039 seconds ahead of Maverick Vinales on the second-best KTM.
