A Victory for Kibaale: HIV Infections Drop Significantly in 2025
The year 2025 has brought a glimmer of hope to Kibaale District, with a remarkable decline in new HIV infections. This positive development is a testament to the district's unwavering commitment to raising awareness and improving access to healthcare.
Acting District Health Officer James Asiimwe shared some eye-opening statistics. In 2024, out of 47,285 residents tested, 380 were confirmed positive for HIV. However, from January to September 2025, the district tested 24,751 people, identifying only 249 new cases. That's a significant drop in infection rates!
Asiimwe attributed this success to the district's sustained awareness campaigns and the availability of Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) services at all health facilities. But here's where it gets controversial: despite the overall decline, some areas within the district experienced localized increases in new infections.
For instance, Mugarama Sub-county saw a rise from 15 cases in 2024 to 39 this year, and Nyamarunda Town Council went from 20 to 32 cases. On the other hand, certain areas witnessed remarkable reductions. Kibaale Town Council reported a drop from 150 cases last year to a mere 82 in 2025, while Matale Sub-county and Kyakazihire Sub-county experienced even steeper declines, with cases falling from 40 to 18 and 32 to 7, respectively.
Asiimwe emphasized that the district's efforts to strengthen community sensitization and expand access to health services will continue. He urged residents to embrace regular testing and to support those living with HIV as Kibaale strives to meet its reduction targets.
This progress is a step in the right direction, but it's important to remember that HIV remains a significant public health concern. What do you think are the key factors contributing to this decline? And this is the part most people miss: how can we ensure that these positive trends continue and even accelerate? Share your thoughts and let's spark a conversation about the future of HIV prevention and care in Kibaale and beyond!
