Unveiling Italy's Nuns' Pilgrimage: A Journey Through Forgotten Landscapes
In a bold move to combat overtourism, Italy has resurrected ancient trails, offering a unique pilgrimage experience through the very heart of medieval Europe's Benedictine monasticism.
A Trail of Faith and Adventure
Imagine embarking on a journey guided by nuns, through landscapes untouched by the tourist crowds. This is the essence of the Cammino della Santissima Trinità, an ecclesiastical adventure that I, along with my friend Sister Katherine Adams, set out to explore.
The Birth of a Holy Trail
While these trails have an ancient history, the santo cammino itself is a recent phenomenon, born in the post-pandemic era of 2022. Sister Adams and her fellow nuns mapped these trails to provide a unique, adventurous experience for young travelers, offering an alternative to the crowded cities and iconic religious monuments.
"Subiaco and Vallepietra hold a wealth of sacred experiences and challenging hikes that often go unnoticed by visitors," Adams shared. And she's right; these places are more than just picturesque ruins.
The Epicenter of Western Monasticism
Subiaco, a town often overlooked, played a pivotal role in the development of Western monasticism. It was here that Saint Benedict of Nursia established his first monastic communities, creating a world focused on prayer, labor, and discipline. These monasteries became cultural hubs, preserving ancient knowledge and shaping the arts, architecture, and even culinary traditions of medieval Europe.
A Journey Through Time
The Cammino delle Abbazie takes pilgrims past the majestic Santa Scolastica monastery, a tribute to Saint Benedict's sister and the founder of Benedictine monastic life for women. Immerse yourself in its ancient library, and then continue to the Sacro Speco monastery, built into a limestone cliff, where Saint Benedict is believed to have lived in penitence.
As you follow the trail, you're walking in the footsteps of shepherds, hermits, and nuns who carried candles and provisions. The trail climbs above Lake San Benedetto, offering breathtaking views of the ravines below.
A Place of Spirituality and Tradition
Friar Maurizio Osb, who guides pilgrims through Sacro Speco, emphasizes the importance of the Benedictine principle of "ora et labora" (pray and work). This principle is evident in the small apothecary room filled with handmade lavender soaps and tinctures, a testament to the long tradition of monastic life.
At Sacro Speco, monks continue the centuries-old tradition of gardening, conserving plants to prepare herbal products now sold at the monastic apothecary. From organic deodorants to peppermint sweets and the famous amaro benedettino, a bitter digestif, these products are a modern reflection of ancient traditions.
In the Footsteps of Ancient Pilgrims
After exploring Subiaco's spiritual world, the journey continues to Vallepietra, an 11th-century village with a rich history. Here, the Sentiero dei Pellegrini (Pilgrims' Path) leads to the Santissima Trinità Sanctuary, a journey that has been a part of this landscape for centuries.
At the sanctuary, the open-air altar has been a focal point for pilgrims since the 5th century. The ancient stone walls are adorned with hagiographic frescoes, and the neoclassical Chapel of San Giuseppe houses ecclesiastical masterpieces. The central fresco of the Holy Trinity, dating back to the 12th century, is a highlight, known for its Byzantine-influenced iconography.
"Symbolism is a key part of this hiking journey," Sister Mary Ricci explains. "Each step brings you closer to simple wooden crosses with messages from pilgrims and candles lit in hope for miracles."
This pilgrimage offers a unique perspective, a journey through forgotten landscapes, and a chance to reconnect with the spiritual and cultural roots of medieval Europe.
