China's Auto Revolution: NEVs Dominate, ICE Cars Disappear from Top 10 (2026)

In a significant shift, China's automotive landscape has witnessed a complete disappearance of traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles from its top 10 best-selling passenger car models. This historic development underscores the disruptive changes taking place in the world's largest auto market.

The May retail sales rankings, as reported by Chinese auto media, reveal an impressive dominance of new energy vehicles (NEVs). All top 10 models are now NEVs, a stark contrast to January's list, which still featured seven ICE vehicles. This rapid transition highlights the accelerating exit of ICEs from the mainstream Chinese auto market.

Taking the top spot is Geely's Xingyuan, a micro EV, followed by Tesla's Model Y. The presence of Xiaomi, Leapmotor, and Li Auto in the top 5 further emphasizes the diverse range of NEV options available to Chinese consumers. The top 10 models encompass battery electric vehicles (BEVs), extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), showcasing the variety of electric-powered options now available.

This shift is not limited to the top 10; even in the top 20 best-selling cars, traditional fuel vehicles are rapidly losing ground. The Geely Boyue, the top-selling fuel car, ranked 17th overall in May. This trend is further accentuated by the NEV retail penetration rate, which soared to a record high of 62.9% in May, marking the second consecutive month of over 60% penetration.

The decline in overall auto retail sales, driven by the rapid contraction of traditional fuel car sales, has been a key factor in this transformation. High oil prices, influenced by geopolitical tensions, have significantly impacted fuel car usage costs, suppressing consumer demand and increasing financial burdens on residents. As a result, NEVs have become an increasingly attractive and cost-effective alternative.

Interestingly, while the domestic market faces challenges, China's auto industry is finding growth in overseas markets. NEV exports surged 112.6% year-on-year in May, accounting for a record-high 54% of total passenger car exports. This shift in the energy structure of automotive transportation has also brought attention to the traditional road tax system, which is now seen as structurally imbalanced.

Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), has suggested reforming the road tax system to address this inequity. He proposes a statutory tax based on driving mileage and vehicle weight, utilizing China's Beidou navigation satellite system for comprehensive tax calculation. Cui emphasizes that the new system should not burden ordinary families, suggesting an annual tax-free mileage quota for private cars and pilot programs in regions like Hainan.

In my opinion, this shift towards NEVs in China is a fascinating development with global implications. It not only highlights the country's commitment to sustainable transportation but also presents an opportunity for other nations to learn from China's experience in transitioning away from traditional fuel vehicles. The success of NEVs in China could potentially accelerate the global adoption of electric mobility, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and contributing to a greener future.

As we reflect on this transformation, it raises a deeper question: Are we witnessing the beginning of the end for traditional fuel vehicles worldwide? The rapid decline of ICEs in China's market suggests that the future of automotive transportation may indeed be electric, and the implications of this shift are far-reaching, impacting not just the environment but also the global economy and our daily lives.
