Cannock Teen Amputee's Swimming Triumph: A Story of Resilience and Triumph

A remarkable 17-year-old amputee, Annabel Kiki from Cannock, has achieved an extraordinary feat in the world of para-swimming. After a challenging journey, she has secured two gold medals and is now ready to take on the national stage.
Annabel's story began when she was diagnosed with bone cancer at just 13 years old, leading to the amputation of her left leg above the knee. This life-altering event didn't deter her; instead, it fueled her determination to excel in her favorite hobbies. She joined her local swimming club and, to her delight, won two medals at the Staffordshire County Swimming Championships.
But her achievements go beyond the pool. In 2024, Annabel made history by winning the Golden Boot award at the women's amputee football World Cup, solidifying her status as a multi-talented athlete. She has also demonstrated her versatility by learning to ski, strutting down the runway at London Fashion Week, and gracing the pages of Italian Vogue magazine.
Despite the challenges she's faced, Annabel remains focused on her goals. She embraces the opportunity to showcase her resilience, even in the most public of settings. As she prepares for her first national para-swimming competition, she shares her philosophy: 'I like to grab every opportunity, and I won't let my past hold me back. I aim to reach my full potential.'
Her brother, Archie, reflects on the family's difficult journey, recalling the 18 months of chemotherapy and the emotional toll it took. Yet, he highlights Annabel's unwavering determination, stating, 'No matter what she sets her mind to, she'll excel, and that's what she's doing.'
The Chase Terrace Academy, her former school, has become a hub for Annabel's training, where she continues to push herself in the pool. Headteacher Nicola Mason expressed the school's immense pride in Annabel's accomplishments, emphasizing her positive impact on the community.
